Lionel Messi becomes first player to win consecutive MLS Golden Boots
Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi has won the 2026 MLS Golden Boot after scoring a league-high 26 goals in 31 matches. He is the first player in MLS history to take the award in consecutive seasons. He finished four clear of FC Dallas forward Petar Musa (22 goals), with Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge third on 21. Messi scored 29 times last season. Only one of this year’s 26 came from the penalty spot, and he led the league with 43 goal contributions. The award was locked up on Decision Day, even though Messi did not score as Inter Miami drew 3-3 with Charlotte after giving up a 3-0 lead. The defending champions still finished second in the Eastern Conference and secured home-field advantage for the first two playoff rounds.
